I’ve always loved the story of Marie Antoinette and the decadence of Versailles on the brink of revolution, and the fact she was just a teenager when circumstances forced her to play a significant role in history.

(Sofia Coppola)

Sofia Coppola is the first American woman to ever be nominated for Best Director. After The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation she's ready for a new wonderful movie. She's set to direct Marie-Antoinette for Columbia Pictures: the movie was announced by Amy Pascal, Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group. Written by Sofia Coppola, the film will be a stylized telling of the queen Marie-Antoinette. Sony will distribute the film worldwide with the exception of France and Japan, the rights to which Coppola has retained. The movie will be based on Antonia Fraser's biography of the queen. Fred Roos, Francis Ford Coppola, and Paul Rassam will serve as executive producers. Shooting begun in France on March and mostly they'll be in Versailles' Palace.

Kirsten Dunst (22) will play Marie-Antoinette in the last Sofia Coppola's movie. When Kirsten was seven years old, she worked with Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese in New York Stories and she became very famous after appearing in the two Spider-Man movies. She has just finished filming Wimbledon with Paul Bettany, the unlikely story of a British tennis champion and she will also play in Cameron Crowe's drama Elizabethtown. Kirsten Dunst is an old friend of Sofia Coppola, infact she appeared in Sofia’s first film, The Virgin Suicides.

Jason Schwartzman, Sofia Coppola's cousin, will play Louis XVI. He started his career in Wes Anderson's Rushmore and he will appear with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell in the upcoming remake of Bewitched. Schwartzman will soon be seen in I Heart Huckabees, with Dustin Hoffman, Jude Law and Mark Wahlberg, and Shopgirl, with Steve Martin. He and Sofia Coppola, both appeared in Roman Coppola's drama CQ.

Other cast's members are Rip Torn (Louis XV), Judy Davis (Comtesse de Noailles), Steve Coogan (Count de Mercy), Asia Argento (Comtesse du Barry), Marianne Faithful (Empress Maria-Teresa), Aurore Clement (Duchesse de Chartres), Molly Shannon (Madame Victoire) and Shirley Henderson (Madame Sophie).

The director of photography is Lance Acord, who collaborated with Sofia Coppola on Lost in Translation. Oscar(R) winner Milena Canonero is the costumes designer and KK Barrett is the production designer.
