Le
salon de musique de Marie-Antoinette - In this
third recording in the Cité de la Musique series, Sandrine Chatron plays
the very rare and beautiful 18th-century harp by Sébastien Érard. The
music selected illustrates the diversity of repertory linked with the
figure of Queen Marie-Antoinette, a music-lover, performer, inspiration,
or patron of the arts. She helped several composers in their careers,
including Gluck, her teacher, and Grétry, both of whom are found on this
recording with other composers from the time of Marie-Antoinette.

A set of
pearls once belonging to Marie Antoinette and taken to Britain by a
friend for safekeeping went on sale from
Christie's on 12th December, and are sold for 1.400.000 Euros. Now part of a diamond, ruby and pearl necklace, France's last
queen gave them to Lady Sutherland, the British ambassador's wife,
during French Revolution. The diamonds were made into a necklace, while
the pearls were mounted later for the occasion of the marriage of
Sutherland's grandson in 1849. |
